Department Physiology

The department of Physiology was founded in 1952.
Professor Parmenov Vasiliy, Doctor of Medicine, a practicing surgeon at present and a former military surgeon, was head of the department in 1952-1969.

 The department was headed by:
- Professor Pyotr Poletayev in 1969-1971;
- Professor Georgiy Melekhin, Doctor of Biological Sciences, in 1971-1979;
- Professor Alexander Kiyenya, Doctor of Biological Sciences, in 1979-1992;
- Associate professor Alexey Karpenko, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, in 1992-1995;

 Since 1996 to the present day the department is headed by Associate professor Larisa Yevtukhova, Master of Agricultural Sciences.

 Main courses of studies:
- Human Anatomy
- Human and Animal Physiology
- Cytology and Histology
- Physiology of Higher Nervous Activity
- Biophysics
- Radiation Safety
- Basic Principles of Immunology
- Biology of Individual Development

 Department courses:
- Age-specific Physiology
- Digestive System Physiology
- Human Environment
- Physiology of Sensory System
- Physiology of Endocrine System
- Selected principles of Human and Animal Physiology

 A great amount of practical work is carried out by the students.

Physiology is an experimental science, and it is obligatory for the students to accompany their studies with the laboratory work. During this work students not only obtain the corroboration of abstract theorems, but also develop professional skills in physiological testing, applied for the examination of human body systems functioning.

The peculiarities of the choice of courses for students are the following:
- systematic presentation of material, from the acquaintance with microstructures of organs and tissues, to their inclusion into the corresponding functional systems and integrative organism functioning;
- practical orientation – students’ studying and mastering of basic research approaches of vital systems of human and animal body.

The aim of the department staff is not just to share the knowledge on the development and functioning of animal and human organisms to the younger generation. They also attempt to develop the responsibility of young biology teachers for their own lives and, what is more important, the admiration for the amazing phenomenon of life itself. It is also important to show them the optimum for healthy functioning of the body and to teach them to use optimally all the enormous opportunities of human brain in learning and creative work, to encourage their further researches.
Since 2008, due to the usage of modern multimedia facilities in education, the department has managed to cease the dissecting experiments on laboratory animals for educational purposes and, as far as it is possible, to reduce the amount of such experiments for scientific purposes. In this respect, the scientific activity in the spheres, where noninvasive methods of physiological systems examination are applied, is more preferable for students. In recent years, the major area of study is concentrated on the examination of physical growth and development of the younger generation of the Gomel region population in the environmental conditions, affected by the Chernobyl catastrophe.
The department keeps up with the times, improving its facilities and following the plan of educational and methodological equipment upgrading, according to its area of research.
The main equipment of the department of Human and Animal Physiology includes: a 12-channel electrocardiograph “Intercard”, an external respiration analyzer (a multipurpose automatic spirometer MAS-1, produced at the UE “Unitechprom BSU”), both purchased in 2006; and the programming veloergometer M32-V1 in 2008. This equipment possesses the extended functional capabilities, meet the world standards, and, what is especially nice to note, is produced in Belarus.
The department plans to purchase the equipment for examination of the higher nervous activity, sensory systems and haemodynamics.
