Department of Forestry disciplines

In November 1930 in Gomel a new research institute Belarusian Forestry Institute (now Forest Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus) and Belarusian Institute of Forestry Engineering (now Belarusian State Technological University) were established. The new research institute became a successor of the first forest research institutions of the country, which were functioning in the 1920s. Both institutions were established simultaneously, on the same staff and production basis. The scientists, who were working at the research institute, were also university teachers. They were Professors V.Zakharov, V. Perekhod, I. Yakhotnov, V. Shkatelov, K. Korotkov and Associate professors I. Yurkevich, P. Rogovoy, G. Golyato and others. Young students were involved into the scientific research process as well, passing later to their work at Belarusian Research Institute of Forestry (now Forest Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus). The prominent scientists were sharing their knowledge and experience with their young colleagues. After the World War II the university was moved to Minsk and during the following decades the Belarusian Technological Institute (now BSTU) was the main provider of forestry staff in the republic.
In the 1990s forestry suffered a lot in the result of Chernobyl catastrophe. Forest enterprises of Gomel and Mogilev regions and Forest Institute of NAS of Belarus faced an acute shortage of specialists with higher education. In this regard, on Academician V. Ipatyev’s initiative, supported by General director of Gomel State Production Forestry Association M. Suprun, in 2003 a new “Forest Management” speciality (1-75 01 01) was established at the Faculty of Biology of Gomel State University, and the first admission of students took part.
History often recurs and, as it was in the 1930s, the scientists working at the institute at that time began to give lectures at the university simultaneously, passing their experience to the younger generation.
The Department of Forest Management has been functioning since September 2004, headed by Professor V. Baginskiy, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, and Assistant director for Research work of the Forest Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
At the department the leading experts of the Forest Institute (V. Baginskiy, V. Stepanchik, A. Kovalevich , A. Sidor, E. Uss, V. Trukhonovets and P. Kolodiy) lectured concurrently. In the 2005-2006 two staff Associate professors were working at the department: M. Lazareva and V. Efimenko, who together performed more than 40% of all workload of the department. Forestry disciplines were lectured by Associate professors A. Kovalevich, L. Maliy, A. Padutov, A. Sidor and Professors V. Usenya and I. Bulavik.
At the present time the teaching staff of the department includes 22 lecturers, including 11 members of regular staff. Leading specialists of the republic in the sphere of forestry are working at the department: forestry science specialist Professor V. Baginsky, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Corresponding Member of NAS of Belarus; Associate professors and Candidates of Sciences M. Lazareva, V. Efimenko, A. Padutov, N. Mitin, P.Kolodiy, Senior Lecturer T. Perevolotskaya. They possess huge experience in research work and are widely known in the world of science.
The department is now headed by Associate professor Marina Lazareva, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences.
More than 500 students are getting their degree at the department at full and part-time forms of education.
In 2006 a branch of the department was established at the Republican subsidiary forest management unitary project enterprise “Gomellesproyekt”, headed by Associate professor F. Burak. Such contemporary science-and data-intensive disciplines as Aerospace Methods in Forestry, Automated Systems of Management in Forestry, a number of classical forestry disciplines (Forest Resource Assessment, Forest Regulation) are studied in the lecture halls and computer labs of the department. Students are trained on the basis of applications that are currently used in forestry management.
In 2008, a branch of the department at the State scientific establishment “Forest Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus” was founded, headed by the director of the institute Associate Professor A. Kovalevich. The young generation of future foresters is given a unique opportunity to be engaged in big science since they are students. Modern techniques, developed at the Forest Institute of NAS B are introduced into the process of education.
The students practise their skills and knowledge on certain subjects at the experimental forest base in Korenyovka.
The department maintains close relations in scientific sphere with numerous research, educational and production forestry institutions of our country and abroad.
The department has organized a student scientific club the “Foresters”, where young scientists take their first steps in forestry research.
In March 2008, the “Forest Management” speciality was accredited. The same year the first forest managers graduated from the university. The students of the first admission withstood all the tests and proved to be well-trained professionals, worthy of their qualification. At the present time, our graduates work fruitfully at forestry enterprises of the State Production Forestry Associations of Gomel, Brest, Mogilev, Vitebsk and Minsk, at the State Scientific Institution “Forest Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus” and “Gomellesproyekt” enterprise.
