Department of Botany and Plant Physiology

 

The Department of Plant Botany and Physiology originates from Gomel Agricultural-Pedagogical Institute opened in 1930. The former Department of Botany had been headed by Associate professors I. Yanovich and N. Menshikova, Candidates of Biological Sciences. Then in 1956-1969 the department was headed by N. Kiseleva, and by Professor A. Palamarchuk, Doctor of Biological Sciences, in 1969-1975.
In 1975 The Department of Botany and the Department of Plant Physiology and Agricultural Sciences were united. Professor F. Kharitonovich, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, was head of the new department till 1985. Since 1986 to 1996 the department was headed by its graduate, Professor L. Sapegin, Doctor of Biological Sciences. In 1996-1997 the department was also headed by its graduate, Professor V. Valetov, Doctor of Biological Sciences. Since 1998 to September, 2004 the department was headed by its graduate as well, Associate professor O. Khramchenkova, Candidate of Biological Sciences.
Since September, 2004 to the present day the department’s graduate, Associate professor N. Dayneko, Candidate of Biological Sciences, is the head of the Department of Plant Botany and Physiology.

Research Areas:

1 The state, rational exploitation and protection of phytodiversity of grassland ecosystems of Pripyat bottom land in the territory of Gomel region.
2 An assessment of anthropogenic contamination of natural and ruderal ecosystems of Mozyr industrial area.
3 The state and assessment of anthropogenic contamination of natural artificial grasslands, their rational exploitatiom and protection in the border territories of Bryansk (Russia), Gomel (the Republic of Belarus) and Chernigov (Ukrain) regions in the Post-Chernobyl period.
4 Modern state, ecological and economical prospects, and conservation measures of vulnerable ecosystems in Eastern Polesie under global climate change/
5 Algal indication and remediation of soils that were excluded from agricultural use.
