The Department of Zoology and Genetic was founded in 1930 on the basis of Gomel Agricultural-Pedagogical Institute. Since its foundation the department had been headed by: Professor V. Vnukovskiy (1933-1934), N. Novitskaya (1937-1938), S. Apel, Candidate of Biological Sciences (1941), Senior teacher I. Kostyuk (1945-1947), Associate professor A. Dobrovolskiy (1947-1953), again Senior teacher I. Kostyuk (1953-1954), Senior teacher P. Grigoryev (1954-1955), Professor V. Parmenov (1955-1956), now Associate professor P. The department has organized a student science research laboratory “Poisk”, where young scientists take their first steps in zoological research.
“The Laboratory of molecular genetic resources and PCR-analysis” has recently appeared and is successfully functioning at the department. The research work on identification and dideoxy sequencing of animals and humans is carried out there. The material and technical base of the laboratory also allows carrying out a new-level laboratory work on the following disciplines: Genetic Engineering, Genetics, Biotechnology.
The teaching staff together with post-graduate students carries our constructive preparation for theses defense. All in all 17 theses have already been defended. There are 5 professors and 18 candidates of sciences among the department graduates. Now they work at scientific institutions, higher educational establishments, schools, various nature preserving, sanitary, ecological and other institutions.
The Department of Zoology and Nature Protection takes an active participation in international cooperation, as numerous joint research programmes are held together with scientists not only from CIS countries but also from other countries near abroad. Joint publications and scientific research projects are the result of this collaboration.
