Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry was founded in 1930 on the basis of chemical-biological department of Gomel Agricultural-Pedagogical Institute, with the term of study of about 2 years. In post-WWII time since 1945, the Department of Chemistry of Gomel Pedagogical Institute n.a. V. Chkalov was headed by Associate professor A. Zenkovich, who gave lectures on organic and inorganic chemistry. The department was provided with equipment and reagents brought back from evacuation. Physical and colloid chemistry studies, as well as chemistry teaching methodology studies were not carried out at all.

In 1948-1957 the department was headed by Associate professor A. Temp, who founded an organic chemistry laboratory. The development of chemistry teaching methodology for secondary schools was the main area of scientific work at that time. “Chemistry Studies for 8-year School” textbook was first published. Since 1952 a club for junior chemists of Gomel secondary school pupils has been guided by the professors.
In 1957-1976 the laboratory studies on analytical chemistry, physical and colloid chemistry and biochemistry were put into the educational process. Associate professors A. Bratolyubov, A. Malakhova and S. Lapitskaya were in charge of the department at that time.

Since 1997 to 2000 the department was headed by Associate professor Yu. Proleskovskiy, Candidate of Chemical Sciences. In that period of time, complex scientific research of physico-chemical characteristics and polycomponent composition of natural salt liquors of Pripyat flexure was carried out along with publication of learners’ guides. The department’s technical base was considerably improved; special techniques of polarographic detection of some microelements in various natural objects were worked out, guided by Associate professor V. Sviridenko. Biochemical analyses of electrophoretic and immunochemical protein features of animal blood serum were carried out, guided by head of the department, Associate professor S. Aleshko.

In 2000-2009 Associate professor V. Shumilin, Candidate of Engineering Sciences, was in charge of the department. Associate professor Yu. Zhuchenko, Doctor of Biological Sciences, has been working as a Professor at our department since 2005. He is a well-known Belarusian radioecologist and a specialist in radiobiology.

In 1989 a new “Biochemistry” specialization was introduced, and in 1994 – “Analytical Chemistry” post-graduate course.
At the present time the department is headed by Associate professor N. Drozdova, Candidate of Chemical Sciences.

The main courses include: General Chemistry, Organic and Inorganic, Analytical, Physical and Colloid Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemistry teaching Methodology and specialization subjects for Biology, Geology-Geography, Physical Training and part-time faculties. The graduates of our department work effectively at higher educational establishments of the region, scientific research and production laboratories, as well as at ecological, agrochemical, biochemical and medical laboratories, and as chemistry teachers at secondary schools.

The department co-operate effectively with Gomel regional Institute of Advanced Pedagogical Studies, where Chemistry contests for school students are organized annually, as well as with the Department of Analytical Chemistry of BSU, Gomel department of the Republican Unitary Enterprise “BRGEI”, the Research Institute of Radiology and other research institutions.
